Short version
The idea
Digital media in performing arts has been object of research and experiments for more than 20 years. Motion capturing, tracking and sensors have been used to create video, graphics, lighting and soundscapes.
Now that technology has advanced to a point where it‘s non-invasive, fast and easy to use, the question of „what is possible?“ shifts towards „what is wanted?“.
The purpose of the project is finding possible answers to that question. How much media makes sense in a performance? What is indispensable, useful or unnecessary?
How do we balance the visual output of a thinking body and a thinking machine?
The story
Our inspiration was a piece by Franz Kafka: „Der Bau“.
The story is written from the point of view of a not further defined animal, living in his huge, maze-like burrow representing his life’s work.
Although he is rather satisfied with his work, some doubts start developing in his mind about the insufficient security of certain areas or concepts of his burrow. The ever feared enemy (that never appears) becomes an increasing burden and object of paranoia and leads to an ultimate state of insanity.
The whole story can be read here (german)
The setting
Setting for the piece will be an old shopping mall in the heart of the city of Halle.
Consisting of three balconies where the audience can be seated, it allows for an interesting point of view that can be utilized for a different viewing experience.
